Oh err, this is taxing on the grey
cells, too many have been killed by Stella to remember things in detail, it's
all a bit of a boozy blur but here goes any way.
The club started life in the late 70's as "The Southwold Bogtrotters Mcc" and was formed by a few people from Yate & Kingswood. We met at "Ye Old Inne" Westerleigh once a week as conveniently it was between both areas. We used the old barn to the rear of the pub which was good as we were out the way and had our own bar with cider by the barrel (yippee).

The Kingswood contingent drank regularly and often too much in "The Horseshoe" on Syston common. From these small beginnings we had club events like the trip to "Avon tyres" in Melksham where we were given a factory tour and swiftly guided away from the new "Super Venoms" that weren't in the shops yet.

Regularly falling down at weekends away and rallies was compulsory, sometimes even a trophy or 2. This continued and the club grew until we decided to take a risk and put on our first "Trot in the Bog" rally. This was held half way up Brent Knoll, near Burnham on Sea, in October. A bit aft a way from Bristol but the field was cheap! marquee, good band, cheap beer and good food, job done.
This was the way of the rally, continuing to improve
with additional bands, bigger marquee, pig roast and visiting fireman that
arrived as the bonfire was reported from the M5! We grew to around 500 bodies
getting pissed in the autumn every year for 5 years. That was until 1987,
Micheal Fish said there would be no !!!HURRICANE!!! it would be just a bit
windy. There we were half way up a sodding great hill on the Thursday night with
a 4 pole marquee, setting up for a weekend of drunkenness and fun for 500 piss
artists, when the light winds hit. Well after fighting with a huge tent and
picking up a couple of bikes it was Friday. Due to the shit weather not that ma
ny
turned up (300 ish), good for a stormy weekend, crap for the club funds. So we
retired from putting them on for a bit
and just attended other peoples, for a while anyway, with Friday nights, on the lash, mostly at the "Granary" in Bristol, the famous rock venue which is now sadly very expensive flats and a restaurant. I hope they like the multi coloured decorations and carrot shapes left from our nights out.
A few of the club members used to help out restore a
disused ammunition depot at "Monkton Farleigh" near Bath. This was an immense 80
acre underground storage depot used during the Second World War and after by the
MOD. It was opened as a tourist attraction and was the venue for a 1 night
party. Mint! 100 feet underground, "The
Late VE Party" was our return to organising events.
What a brilliant night. Pissed bikers wandering around underground with torches,
exploring the depot. The party was held in a small area deep inside the mine
with music, bar and food layed on. A few thunder flashes thrown in and all club
members dressed in war time gear. Camping being up on the surface. An
outstandingly different party.
We
did try a second party the following year but got reported to the holding
company and we got cancelled at the last minute on the day of the party. Shit we
got 200 people coming to a party that’s cancelled from all over the South West
area. Where can I hide! Well every body was very good and slept in Barns, old
garages and under the Stars. The local pub was invaded and the Mod band that was
playing were a bit taken a back with all these hairy leather clad people. But a
spanking night was had by all in the end.
By now the club had shrank to just the Kingswood contingent of piss artists. The Southwold bit no longer applied so was dropped from the name for the current run of the rally now in its 9th year in 2005. All the silliness started again in 1996 at The Bungalow Inn by Bristol airport. We tested the water for Back to the Bog and found we still liked putting them on, so no longer a marquee rally due to the expense and a change of date to the summer saw us back in business again. A couple of years at The Bung until a change in landlord ( new one was too grumpy, polite way of saying toss pot) and a move to The Riverside Inn. This is a very scenic pub next to the river with camping for about 250. A similar formula of cheap food, beer and good music with something a bit different every year and the story rolls on.
We now meet on the 1st Sunday of the month in the Wetherspoons Kingswood or any Wednesday for those who get thirsty!
